“HAVANA 1963| In 1961, hunted by FBI, Robert Franklin Williams, advocate of armed self-defense in the Civil Rights Movement, fled to asylum in Cuba. Permitted by Fidel Castro to have the only private radio program and publication in the country Williams’ “Radio Free Dixie” broadcasts and “Crusader” newsletter, warning of ghetto uprisings and urban guerilla warfare, reached tens of thousands across the USA. In 1963, authorized by the US State Dept. and Cuban Foreign Ministry to film the Revolution’s effects on upper, middle, and lower economic class Cubans, I first met and interviewed Williams. These photos of him and his Wife, Mabel, were taken inside their home in Havana.” Robert Carl Cohen
